Clocks

The contrary motion and back-and-forth nature of the parts in each hand are reminiscent of clocks ticking. Specifically, the idea of walking into the home of a clockmaker and being surrounded by the ticking of various clocks. The piece starts slow, as if only one ticking sound is heard, then by the middle of the piece all of the bells and chimes are ringing, as all of the clocks come to live. Then, slowly, they fade out again until we are left with just the single timepiece.
