Infernal Variations, as the name implies, is a theme and variations for percussion ensemble. After a mysterious introduction, the slow, intense theme is introduced, followed by several variations in differing style, giving the students multiple opportunities for stylistic expression. It’s written for a variety of strengths in the ensemble, such as involved two-mallet parts, a moderately active snare part, timpani, and accessory instruments. It also can be adapted to a flexible number of players by splitting the accessory part and doubling mallet parts without sacrificing the overall balance of the ensemble.
