Open really is an interpretive piece. It is a loosely guided work where the player decides how much space and rubato they want to put into it. There are note values, but those can actually be fluid and bendable to the player’s interpretation. This work has many fermatas and caesurae that will help create moments of pause. Take advantage of these moments! Open is about meditation. It is about silence and space being part of music. It is about being in the now, in the current moment. So, when you play the first G of the work, with the specific direction to let it die away, that is a moment that you and the audience can enjoy together. The simplicity of just enjoying the resonance and gaining an awareness of the vibrato is strong. Enjoy, O p e n.
